BUSY DAYS and more fun…

August 18, Thursday…our “rest”day!  Sunday evening we went to the Edmonds train station and picked up my cousin (2nd) Rogene and husband Jim for a 2 day visit with us after their visit and cruise up in Alaska.  They are from Tyler, Texas so this was a real treat.  I think we treated them “real good” too and the weather was 100% cooperative with sun and temps in the low and middle 70’s instead of 100+ at home.

Monday, up to catch a ferry (always a treat for me) to the Olympic Penninsula and then northward up to charming Port Townsend (filled with Victorian houses) and a visit to fort Worden, the site of the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman”.  We had lunch in Chimicum (bet you’ve never heard of that place) at the local cafe.  If we had time we were planning to go up to the National Park in the mountains if the weather cleared, but we just plum ran out of time.  Home and dinner at “The Beach Cafe” in Edmonds (all you can eat fish and chips night) - so of course that was Ron’s choice - not for me but they had plenty of choices.  Home tired and had plenty of exercise.

Tuesday, same morning timetable, leaving the house at 10 to go down to the famous Pike Street Market where they toss salmon to the amazement of those nearby.  Saw lots of crafts, fabulous flowers for sale, produce of all kinds and then had lunch at the oldtimer cafe, the Athenian, upstairs with a great view of Seattle’s harbor, ferries, tugs, etc.  Then home so that Ron and Jim could meet son Ray out at Paine Field to go to an aviation museum.  Jim’s a “docent” at their local aviation collection so hard to impress him, but they had a good time and Ray is a great and verbal guide!  Home to get ready for dinner with 4 family members, Karen and Dave and Ray and Karen…..ham and scalloped potatoes tasted good along with the lively conversation.

Wednesday, up and at it, left to drive half way to Portland to meet Rogene’s cousin on her dad’s side and go home with them before their departure on Saturday.  We went up to the viewpoints along the way to Johnson Ridge which lets you see what is left of Mt. St. Helens earthquake back in 1980.  Rogene and I took tons of digital photos complete with poles, signs and trees.  We stopped on the way at “Patty’s Place” cafe…yes…..I thought when I gave Patty my card she might give me a free lunch or berry cobbler, but nuts, not so.  Fun, old fashioned place with our picnic table overlooking the river.  Up the mountain….I kept opening the window to catch a shot and the air blew all the curl out of Rogene’s hair!  Sorry sweetheart.  And, let me say that she is a sweetheart and we got along famously.  Sorry to see them go and hope that she might be able to go with me to Paris next April!  That would “awesome”.

We visited them in Texas last fall on our 6100 mile trip and were delighted that this all worked out.  She and I are going to work hard to keep in touch better.  To end the day we stopped in Rochester to see friend Lassie, and she took us to dinner at the casino. I bravely put four, $1 bills in the money grabber slot machine one at a time - fun and by golly, I won $4.24 so ahead 24 cents.  She always is more gutsy and put in $20 and ended up with $26.  She shared a dollar with me.  Always fun with Lassie.  Okay….all for  now.  Will download my 50 Mt. St. Helen shots and try to add at least one to this. And today, other than wash to hang out, will just go slow and enjoy it!  Greetings to all and hugs all around.  Patty

FAMILY PICNIC

August 7 at the Gazebo at the Edmonds City Park….our Price family has gotten together for a picnic for several years now, and again, we gathered together….15 of us.  All of the younger ones were busy but Liam and Sue’s 2 boys were there, ages 8 & 12, with base ball and glove in hand. We met at 1 pm, were planning to bar-b-que and use a George Forman grill but alas, there was no electricity.  Ron went for chicken and we easily adjusted.  Good food and lots of sharing what’s been going on in our lives with each other.  Ron & Gerry’s cousin, Ned Peterson came with his rebuilt ‘41 Chevie…..a beauty….will try to add photo but you should have seen what he started with!! We were de;ighted to have the newly weds, Emily and Jared with us too…..(I wrote a whole section on the wedding, July 22nd,  and it disappeared so have to settle down and rewrite for you)  Traditional “group picture” taken and will be included below.

SKI BUS PICNIC

JULY 14….And a wonderful time was had by all.  20 of us from ski days,  gathered at the home of Virginia and Laurie Paradise on Lake Samamish.  It was fun getting caught up on news and travel events, ate good food including the huge turkey that Virginia grilled….seeing all the goodies in her home including her beautiful and often prize winning quilts (she also makes teddy bears out of fur coats for friends)…they both are enormously talented. Watched a video of Paul Weston flying his experimental seaplane (he’s in his 80’s!  Good show Paul!),  and the Paradise’s trip to Norway including going way up north to Sor-Spitsbergen National Park.  It didn’t rain so Ron sat on the deck surrounded by five gals….how did he manage that!  I will offer the SKI BUS one more year starting in January and all were glad to hear the news.  Just have to get the news out to ski touring folks, and those that just want a day “away”.

But now, let us enjoy these “summer” days….I love my flowers and enjoying “Cat”…no name yet and to date, she is now calling the shots with loud meows…..enjoys dashing thru the house and sleeping on OUR bed!   Back to you soon….Me

HURRAY…we’ve got a CAT!

JULY 7th……Can you believe it?  Ron had not been willing to add an animal to our twosome, but after thousands of hints and another thousand “I sure would like to have” comments, he sucumbed.  There had been a single cat in a cage out at a pet store which I saw when I had my hair done, next door. Three years old, gray long haired, white patches and all the needed things like shots, being nuetured, had been done.  We were out there yesterday to have breakfast with Karen and I said, could we just stop and see if she is still there.  So we did, and we did get her!  She is a doll and very cuddly, and very, very snoopy.  She checked out the house and hid under our bed when she felt threatened, but started following Ron around…and when he just came in she greeted him and circled around his pants legs.  Funny.  I am delighted and will include a photo when I get one.  Name?  They called her “Azalea”—-a poor name for a cat and I am considering “Sara” after my blind friend who went on a couple of trips with me and made me aware of textures!  So how do you describe colors I asked her. She said “for example, gray is like a soft shawl”.  And there you have it.  Any suggestions?  Cooler today and I love these kinds of days.  Enjoy!

JULY 4th

Today we say thanks for the country we live in and the home we have. A beautiful day here in Seattle and Ron and I celebrated by taking a boat ride out of Tacoma to see an air show while admiring Mt Rainier off across the water.  Lunch included was rather a hoot….chips in little bags, hot dogs, coleslaw and cookies all included in the $40 tag (each).  Needless to say, if we did this again, we would picnic on the beach ($15 for parking for 2 or more). But the jets and and slow flyers were impressive and I thought of Erik when a C17 (BigFatUglyFellow) went over.  It moved as slow as his KC135 did!  Check out the photos on the google site:  freedom fair air show.  I tried to take pictures but just got lots of blue sky.

I also give thanks for my precious family and all my friends - memories included.  Love you all. Bye…

Blog time

JUNE 27…watching the baseball game and our Goldfinches returning for their evening meal. Another nice day…..watercolor class this AM (made it which is hard for me, the night-owl, as it starts at 9 AM.)  Lunch at the Center and then more directions in knitting class about Sock # 1, Pair #2….looks like I’m going to make it. I’ll post a picture - bet you are thrilled! Also a couple of donations:  down comforter for Tent City #3 plus a bag of clothes.  The living room looks like Goodwill and the utility room like a laundromat.  Loretta and I are going down to TC this week and I hope tomake it to Nicholsville as I have 30 mats donated by my friend Frank at Creation Station in Lynnwoodl  Still wondering how I - we can get the message to the city “biggies” about the sad, pathetic, unsettling and inhumane situation at Nicholsville (homeless folks in tents stuck in a field in the middle of industrial Seattle - grrrrr).

Worked this weekend at the Senior Center  Thrift Shop during the Center’s Arts & Crafts Show - lots of wonderful things to see.  BUT  I got the time to tidy up shelves and get rid of some of the real junk that seems to wind up there…..still some more to do, but that’s tomorrow.  P.S. Anybody out there? Let me hear from you!  Hugs

My “Roots”…

JUNE 21:  As most of my family knows, I started in working on our family’s history, got computer software “Reunion 9” which is wonderful and have about 533 names in the program - and can put together a  pretty good “tree” instantly.  I started researching my mother’s mother… Nina… because I knew that my Grandmother Haffner, was not mom’s real mother.  Thru the months since I started,  I would easily get sidetracked with the Prices, Petersons, Nelsons, etc….but now am back to my first goal.  Today had class at the  Senior Center which has a remarkable genealogy class which is full of “how to’s and “where is” Web locations so will put that information to use .  No Goldfinches today but lots of new poppies blooming.

Today’s HOOT!

JUNE 20…..off today to knitting class, step by step the battle’s won……and ran into an acquaintance who asked if I was still gathering clothes for Tent City.  ”I have some really nice clothes” she said, “would you like to have them?”  ”Of course,” I replied, and we went directly to her car.  She opened the trunk and there, there….there in front of me was an enormous black garbage bag that must have been 4 feet long and 2 & 1/2 ft wide STUFFED into the area.  ”You take one end and I’ll take the other” she said as we grunted and groaned to lift the bag.  I staggered under the weight of the bag but made it on bended legs to the back of my van, which it filled.  I guess  I will have to leave it in the van as I sort thru it all to put in boxes of like items.  You welcome to come and help me sort and fold!    Enjoy this beautiful day!
